Interview with Mateusz Kolacki

Mateusz Kolacki is a website developer who is building his own online business by offering services to entrepreneurs.

In this interview, he told us about his life, how he started this business, the challenges he faced, and some insights for new entrepreneurs.

I hope you enjoy it!

Hi, Mateusz Kolacki! Tell us, Who are you and what are you working on? Which is your business?

Hi! Most people struggle to say my name, so to make it easier just call me Matt :).

I’m a guy from Poland that has been living in the UK since I was 9 years old (I’m currently 24). I work 9-5 as a network & infrastructure engineer. It's a very interesting job however I am on a journey to escape 9-5.

As a side hustle, I’m running a website design & search engine optimization business, but I also offer graphic design, social media management, ghostwriting, and general brand growth packages.

What's your story and how did you come up with the idea of starting this?

From a young age, I was interested in computers, servers and network equipment, when I was around 14 I started to learn how to code. The first two languages I learned were HTML and CSS, then I built a website server to host a very basic website… I haven’t stopped since! I built hundreds of custom websites however as technology is moving forward, I stopped doing fully custom sites and moved to use WordPress to speed up the process.

In recent years I built a fair amount of dropshipping sites, for myself and clients. This forced me to master SEO, Social media marketing, and general brand growth.

Now, I’m using Twitter accounts to grow my brand, and share my skills to hopefully help other people!

Which are your marketing strategies to grow your business?

I use & test a variety of different ways to market my business. My primary is Twitter, both inbound and outbound DMs.

I also use cold emails, I use Appollo.oi to find prospects and use cold emails to reach out to people.

The last one is paid marketing, using Facebook advertising.

This is mainly used to collect emails, providing free value in return for a subscription to mail lists. I’m still testing this method, but it is working okay so far.

Do you work alone or do you have employees?

I work alone. I’m open to having employees in the future if needed.

How are you doing today and what are your goals for the future?

I’m doing great! The main goal is to hit $2k a month from my own business, this would allow me to quit my 9-5 and survive. Once I quit my 9-5 I could scale my business by simply working more.

Since starting your journey, what have been your main lessons?

Just be yourself. I used to be very formal and saw no growth. Now I put more personality into my content, my cold emails, and my products. It's been a game-changer!

What were the biggest challenges you faced and obstacles you overcame?

This is something that a lot of people will face that want to run away from 9-5 - managing time, especially when you have a family.

I learned to program my day and stick to it. It gave me a lot of anxiety at first however like with anything you get better at it as time goes by.

Do not sacrifice your sleep to grow your brand. Even if you work 1 hour a day on your own brand, if you are well rested, you will make more progress than you would do in 3 hours of work.

If you had the chance of doing only one thing differently, what would it be?

I would start with Twitter earlier. It’s been a huge boost to my business. I don’t regret starting a few months ago, but I could have been further ahead if I started 2 years ago.

What tools and resources do you recommend for people starting their journey?

I recommend reading the following books:

  • Dotcom secrets

  • Expert Secrets

  • Traffic Secrets

By Russell Brunson

This is everything you would need to start your online business journey.

If you want to start working as a web designer/developer and learn SEO, I recommend learning WordPress first! After that learn how to code in HTML, CSS, and PHP.

For SEO, I recommend my e-book that’s going to be coming out 1st of September, it will give you everything you need to get started!
